      <image:title>Latest News - First Friday Memo - March 2026 - 20 Dollars No Longer Provides 100 Meals</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’ve been connected with the Food Bank of Central Louisiana for a while, you’ve seen statements like, “$1 provides five meals” or “Every $20 helps us provide 100 meals.” And it was true for a long time – it used to cost our food bank just about 20 cents for every meal provided. Well, it’s sad to say that simply isn’t true anymore. Higher prices, tariffs, extreme weather, and supply chain issues have impacted food production, driving up expenses for food producers. Corporate food donations are becoming smaller and less frequent as their costs rise. At the same time, budget cuts at the USDA have reduced the amount of food sent to food banks to feed low-income families. In 2025, the Food Bank of Central Louisiana had to purchase more food than ever before to make up for millions of pounds in cancelled food donations. Everyone knows that the price of food has risen. But other costs that impact food bank operations have also been on the rise, including transportation, utilities, materials, and just about everything else that goes into sourcing, acquiring, moving, storing, sorting, packing and distributing food. When we crunched the numbers this time, we found that it now costs our food bank more than twice what it used to – about 44 cents – to provide the equivalent of one meal (about 1.2 pounds of food) to a food-insecure neighbor. Your continued support is more important than ever as we work together to ensure no one in our community goes without a meal.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest News - First Friday Memo - February 2026 - USDA Releases New Report on Food Security in the United States</image:title>
<image:caption>According to the most recent report from the USDA, 48 million people live in food insecure households. This means that, at least some of the time, 48 million people in the US didn’t know when or how they would have their next nutritious meal. People across the spectrum are affected - seniors, college students, veterans, families excluded from the workforce because of disabilities and families with multiple people who are employed full time. A few key findings from the report: More than 14 million children live in food insecure households. The rates among children continue to be the highest since 2014. Food insecurity remains higher in rural areas than urban areas. Over one million more seniors experienced food insecurity in 2024 compared to 2023. Research has shown self-care can help increase happiness by up to 71% when we manage our stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle. National Wellness Month encourages individuals to make self-care a priority, build healthy routines, and support their mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Whether you’re focusing on hydration, movement, nutrition, mindfulness, or simply slowing down, this month is your reminder to put yourself first.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rapides Regional Medical Center Conducts a Timely Cereal Drive In Central Louisiana, one in four children are food insecure. During the summer, without school meals, families struggle even more to feed their kids. That’s why we were so grateful to receive a donation of more than 2,500 boxes of cereal from Rapides Regional Medical Center last month. Thanks to the hospital employees who supported the Food Bank through this drive!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Employer Gift Matching Programs are Under-Used Many companies offer a corporate matching gift program – where they financially match donations that their employees make to nonprofit organizations. But too many people don’t know what their employer offers. An estimated $4 to $7 billion in matching gifts are left on the table every year! Some companies even offer paid time off for employees to volunteer at a local charity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Latest News - First Friday Memo - June 2025</image:title>
<image:caption>New Map the Meal Gap Study Examines Food Insecurity Food insecurity affects every county in the United States, according to Feeding America’s annual Map the Meal Gap study. At the local level, the study finds: Overall food insecurity has increased in every parish served by the Food Bank of Central Louisiana, including Allen, Avoyelles, Catahoula, Concordia, Grant, LaSalle, Natchitoches, Rapides, Sabine, Vernon and Winn. About one in five people (19.1%) across Cenla live in food-insecure households. The highest increases in food insecurity were among adults aged 18-60. Children across the region did slightly better than the previous year. However, the situation remains severe with more than one in four children facing hunger in parts of Cenla.</image:caption>

To participate, leave a bag of non-perishable food next to your mailbox for your letter carrier to pick up. Each year, letter carriers across the country head out on their routes on the second Saturday in May to collect donations of non-perishable food items to benefit local food pantries. Since launching in 1993, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has grown into the nation’s largest one-day food drive, helping to fill the shelves of food banks in cities and towns throughout the United States. Simply leave your donation of non-perishable food in a bag near your mailbox on May 10th, and your letter carrier will do the rest. Let’s make a difference</image:caption>

<image:caption>Child Hunger Doesn’t Stop During the Schoolyear Schools do a good job providing lunches (and sometimes breakfast) to kids who qualify for free and reduced meals. But what happens after the bell? A new “Household Food Insecurity in the United States” report from the USDA found that more children are living in food-insecure households than last year. That means that more kids face hunger when they get home from school. At the Food Bank, we offer several programs to help keep children fed after school and over weekends. The BackPack Program and the Child Care Food Program provide meals and snacks specifically for children. SNAP Outreach helps families with food stamp applications; and our household food distribution programs provide monthly groceries to families. With more than one in four Cenla children living in food insecurity, we are so thankful to all the donors who help ensure that the food bank’s child nutrition services operate all year round.</image:caption>

<image:caption>September is Hunger Action Month There’s plenty of food in America; yet 67,120 people in Central Louisiana, including 23,380 local children, still don’t have the food they need to thrive. September is Hunger Action Month and the Feeding America network is calling on everyone to take one million actions against hunger. Hunger Action Month is the Feeding America network’s annual awareness effort that takes place each September to encourage everyone to engage in the movement to end hunger. Every action counts–whether you donate, advocate, volunteer or spread the word online. Let’s end hunger together.</image:caption>

<image:caption>SUN Meals for Kids Were Provided at 17 Summer Feeding Sites We have just wrapped up our Summer Food Service Program, dubbed SUN Meals by the USDA. Through SUN Meals, kids of all ages can eat meals and snacks during the summer at no cost at schools, parks, and other neighborhood locations. This summer, 17 partners stepped up to host meal sites where kids either gathered for meals and activities, or were able to access a nutritious meal through grab-and-go service. We expect SUN Meals to expand to even more locations next summer!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Latest News - First Friday Memo - June 2024</image:title>
<image:caption>June Marks the Start of Hurricane Season Here in Louisiana, we’re no strangers to major storms and the winds and flooding they bring across the state. When they hit, the food bank responds with emergency food for people who are affected. We’ll send additional mobile food pantries to hard-hit areas, we’ll provide emergency food for families who lose power or can’t stay in their homes, and we’ll supply food for people from all over the state who evacuate to the Alexandria Medical Special Needs Mega Shelter and other shelters across our region. In short, hurricane season means we must be prepared to distribute more food to more places – on very short notice. The last two years, we were lucky, with no hurricanes making landfall on the Louisiana coast. This year, experts predict a busy season. And while we won’t know if, where, or when until we’re needed, rest assured we’re prepped and ready to respond.</image:caption>

Virtual food drives allow the Food Bank to purchase what it needs when it’s needed. It also allows contributors to participate from the comfort of their own home. To get started, create your virtual food drive fundraising page by clicking here. Once you’ve registered and launched your virtual food drive fundraising page, download our Virtual Food Drive Manual for tips on managing a successful drive. <image:caption>The Food Bank of Central Louisiana participates in the Summer Food Service Program. The Summer Food Service Program, also known as the Summer Meals Program, was established by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. When school is out, SFSP provides free meals to kids and teens in low-income areas. Meals will be provided to all eligible children without charge. Acceptance and participating requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity in any program or activity conducted or funded by USDA, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.
