Fight Hunger. Spark Change

An elderly couple from Grant parish came to the Food Bank unannounced to see our executive director. The husband has been volunteering to distribute food boxes to the needy seniors for many years. When they came to visit us at the Food Bank, we thought they had come to apply for the Adopt-a-Senior program themselves.

But, they were coming to seek help for their neighbor. She is 64, about to turn 65, and lives alone. Peggy makes about $500 per month. When the elderly couple went to visit her, they found that the only food in her home was part of a jar of peanut butter and a half of pint of ice cream. Peggy told them that she had been eating peanut butter sandwiches for the past two weeks, but she was out of bread. Her daughter had given her the ice cream.

The elderly couple delivered a food box to her and helped her complete the application for the Adopt-a-Senior Program.

Peggy is one of seniors in Louisiana who experiences food insecurity. Our state leads the nation in senior food insecurity, with 12.3% of the senior population at risk for hunger.

You can help by supporting your Louisiana food bank through the Fight Hunger.Spark Change campaign.
